Security-related grant processes are complicated and full of words and terms that most people are not familiar with. This glossary is intended to help make sense of the terms of organizations that we work with as a part of the security grant process.

FEMA: Federal Emergency Management Administration – a division of the federal government, which is the division that oversees federal security grant programs.

DHS: Department of Homeland Security. This is the government department which is the home of FEMA.

NSGP: Nonprofit Security Grant Program. This is the primary program where nonprofits from across the country can apply for security enhancements from the federal government.

TVTP: Targeted Violence Terror Prevention program. This is a second federal grant program relating to security. The goal of the program is for your organization to work with other organizations in a community to prevent hatred from spreading.

State-based grants: Security grants that are funded and regulated by a specific state. There is no federal component to these grants. As of 2023, there are 14 states that have specific security grant programs, with their own requirements.
